Jonathan Temaul, a program graduate, exemplifies the success of the initiative. Now thriving in his role managing mail operations, he recalls enjoying the hands-on tasks integral to his training. "I like to meter mail. That's my favorite part when it goes through the machine. There's a zoom, zoom," he shares with a smile. His story reflects the program's ultimate goal: to facilitate a successful transition from the classroom to the workforce, allowing students to embrace their potential confidently.
Innovative Learning Approaches Making a Difference
The Pepin Academies Transition Program departs from traditional education models. Instead of daily classroom attendance, students engage in a flipped model that prioritizes practical learning experiences. They participate in community-based training 2 to 4 days a week, mastering essential skills like financial management, professional etiquette, and cooking. Hillsborough County Public Defender Lisa McLean emphasizes the program’s commitment, saying, "We’re so excited to see the work that they're doing and how important it is."
Building Community Connections for Future Success
One of the most promising aspects of this program is its partnerships with local organizations. Students often find job placements at businesses like Publix, AdventHealth, and Tampa General Hospital. These collaborations not only provide employment opportunities but also foster acceptance and pride within the community. Pepin Academies Executive Director Jeff Skowronek expresses his hope: "There's a great sense of pride for knowing that our students are getting placed and embraced by companies, just like any other employee."

"Even in today's society, as embracing as we are of individuals with disabilities, it's still difficult," he reflects.
