Birds Get a Second Chance at the Rebuilt Seaside Seabird Sanctuary
The Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, nestled in the serene Indian Shores of Pinellas County, has risen from the rubble after being ravaged by hurricanes in 2024. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Greater Good Charities, the sanctuary, which is instrumental in rehabilitating injured seabirds, is back and better than ever.
After hurricanes Helene and Milton wreaked havoc on the coast, the sanctuary faced a staggering $600,000 in damages. Melissa Edwards, the Avian Hospital Director, expressed the magnitude of the situation, stating, "Hurricane Helene flooded all our buildings and enclosures; and then Milton really damaged the netting protecting our seabird enclosures." Unlike traditional businesses, the sanctuary could not simply shut down, as it houses over 100 birds that rely on its care.
Community Support Shines Bright
In the face of disaster, resilience and community spirit prevailed. The sanctuary was grateful for the assistance of dedicated volunteers who helped with the cleanup and generously contributed to fund renovation works. However, the technical aspects of rebuilding required expertise that went beyond the capabilities of local volunteers.
This is where Greater Good Charities came into play. Their Pet Program and Construction Team not only donated their time but also brought in specialized equipment such as lift vehicles and netting to reconstruct the outdoor aviary enclosures. Zach Baker from Greater Good Charities shared, "We love working with non-profits that do important work like this—it's about getting them back on their feet so they can continue their vital mission."

"We’ve just put up a ton of material—a third of a mile of rigging has gone into the new enclosures," Baker added, highlighting the scale of the undertaking.
