The viral video showed Waddles in a distressing condition, suffering under the hot sun without sufficient water or shelter. Kelly Dill, a local rescuer from Pork Butt Pastures, took matters into her own hands after visiting the SPCA to see Waddles firsthand.
In her words, Dill described the experience as "absolutely horrifying." She noted, "He was raw and bloody, with no water — just out in the hot sun, roasting." Seeing Waddles in such a critical state prompted her to rescue him immediately. " If I hadn’t taken him, it would’ve been death for sure—within 24 to 48 hours, he would no longer be here,” she added.
SPCA's Defense
As more details unfolded, the SPCA of Tampa Bay and its President, Martha Boden, provided an alternate narrative. They contend that Waddles had arrived at their facility with existing health issues and that they had created a suitable environment for his recovery. Boden emphasized that Waddles had access to veterinary care, adequate housing, and enrichment activities during his stay.
"We feel really good about the way we were able to help him stabilize," Boden said, showcasing the barn and mudholes designed to keep Waddles comfortable. However, she expressed concern over the "misinformation and speculation" circulating in the wake of the incident, leading to threats directed at her staff. The SPCA has since consulted legal professionals to contest the animal cruelty citation issued by Animal Services.
