According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), fraudsters are impersonating law enforcement officials and attempting to extort money from unsuspecting family members.
How the Scam Works
The scammers, who often introduce themselves as "Sergeant Matthews" or "Sergeant Rudolph," claim that a family member is eligible for release if a certain payment is made. Victims are instructed to transfer money using Cash App or even through cryptocurrency ATMs, a red flag that many people may overlook due to the increasing popularity of digital payments.
As investigations have revealed, these fraudulent calls have been sophisticated. Victims are told to go to various public locations, such as the Sheriff's Office Administration Building or the Criminal Justice Center, only for plans to change abruptly, redirecting them elsewhere—a tactic designed to confuse and isolate the victim further.

The Sheriff’s Office has reiterated that such transactions will never occur, emphasizing that officials will not request payment or sensitive banking information over the phone.
