Prepare for Hurricane Season with Drive-Thru Supplies
As hurricane season approaches, it’s essential for residents of St. Petersburg and the broader Suncoast community to be prepared. The nonprofit organization, I Care St. Pete, is stepping up to help with a drive-thru hurricane supply giveaway on May 24. This event aims to equip at least 500 local families with necessary supplies, reflecting the nonprofit's commitment to community well-being.
Community at the Heart of the Initiative
Co-founders Kulmalee and Jose Alvelo emphasize the importance of community in their organization. "This is the South, and people here need help. They are friendly, family-oriented, and they care about each other," Kulmalee mentioned, suggesting that this drive-thru event is not merely about distributing supplies but fostering a sense of unity and support within the community.
What’s Available for Residents
The supplies provided during the giveaway are comprehensive and aimed at meeting various needs during catastrophic weather events. These items include tarps, mops, mold sprays, food supplies, sandbags, cleaning materials, and even gloves and boots. All necessary items for everyone awaiting the impending hurricane’s blow can be obtained for free. Kulmalee Alvelo shared how last year's hurricane season showcased the emotional impact of such resources. “When we hand out a supply, some families just break out in tears,” she explained, showcasing how vital this event is for psychological as well as physical stability.
Building Resilience in the Community
I Care St. Pete has been active in St. Petersburg for three years, changing lives through charitable healthcare and critical resources. Their successful model allowed them to gain additional supplies from the National Guard after a previous event saw a car line stretching a half-mile. This growth speaks volumes to the importance of community support during turbulent times.
A Call for Volunteers
As preparations are underway, I Care St. Pete is seeking volunteers to help with the distribution on May 24. This is a wonderful opportunity for community members to get involved, engage with their neighbors, and contribute to a cause that impacts everyone during hurricane season.
In light of this upcoming event, residents are encouraged to gather what they can for themselves and to help their neighbors prepare. It's more important than ever for our Suncoast community to show resilience during such natural calamities. Preparedness at the grassroots level can make a significant difference in how effectively we respond to disasters.
For everyone living in the affected areas, mark your calendars for May 24 and head to I Care St. Pete’s headquarters at 2330 Dr. MLK Jr. St. S. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Together, let’s stand strong against the hurricane season!
