Patricia Pete, a dedicated customer service representative at the library, is proud to be part of a system that supports community growth. Having spent time teaching English in South Korea and Japan, she returned to Sarasota, where her childhood dream of working at a library became a reality. “Since elementary school, I wanted to be surrounded by books and unique people because that’s where I feel like I fit in,” she shares. Her commitment extends to ensuring that all patrons feel welcome and engaged.

Recent federal funding cuts have sparked concern among library staff and patrons alike. With the Institute of Museum and Library Services facing budget reductions, libraries like Sarasota’s could lose vital support. Patricia acknowledges these worries but emphasizes the library's resilience: “We can only manage what we have control over, which is this library. We hope the community will continue to advocate for us.” The library’s role in providing essential services, from tutoring to business assistance, makes community support crucial now more than ever.

The benefits of having a library card go well beyond borrowing books. Patricia highlights valuable resources such as language learning programs, tutoring, and a plethora of databases for entrepreneurs searching for grants and business plans. Additionally, patrons can enjoy innovative entertainment options like Hoopla, a streaming service providing access to movies, music, eBooks, and even a new app called Comics Plus, which features a vast selection of comics. “We have fun stuff, too,” says Patricia, reflecting the effort to make the library a vibrant community space.

Nestled between three schools, the library has created a Kid Zone aimed at offering a safe and engaging environment for children.
